1, I rewrote the news report1 because there are not enough information, so please check it out.

2, I made VOCABURARY LISTS by using the paper English-English dictionaries every time ,so I sometimes could not find out the new words that are not on the dictionaries. Therefore, I skipped the one that I cannot find out in any dictionaries like special idioms or abbreviations although I researched most of vocaburalies.

There is a problem of the Internet on the previous one ,so I rewrite the recipe blog here.

-Baked Potato Soup-

Imagine a baked potato with all your favorite toppings but in soup form. March brings so much temperamental weather to Seattle, sunny one minute then overcast and raining the next. This soup is perfect for a cold and wet afternoon that happens all too often these days.

I think the best part of the soup is the fried potato skins; they’re reminiscent of the crisp skin of a baked potato. I use milk in this recipe because it’s something that’s always in my fridge, but half and half can be substituted for a creamier soup. Alternatively, you can increase the amount of stock and use a cup of cream instead of milk for an even richer soup.

ingredients
5 Russet potatoes, scrubbed (I’m a terrible estimator of weight, I’d say around 2 lbs?)
1 medium onion, chopped
6 oz bacon, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 Tbsp flour
1 1/2 C chicken stock
2 1/2 C milk (at least 2% milk fat)
1 bay leaf
1 sprig of thyme or 1/4 tsp dried thyme
salt and pepper

toppings
Cheese: shredded cheddar, Gruyere, etc.
Sour cream
Chives or green onions

In a Dutch oven or stockpot, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp and fat has rendered. While the bacon is cooking, peel the potatoes in wide strips and save the peels without skin damage or buds. Chop potatoes into 1/2 in cubes. Remove the bacon to a paper towel lined plate.

Add the potato skins to the fat in the pot and cook for about 4 minutes. At this point you can continue crisping in the bacon fat another 4 minutes or bake the skins in the oven. I find it more convenient to finish crisping in a toaster oven and continue cooking the rest of the soup. I spread them in a layer on a piece of foil and bake for another few minutes at 300ºF, checking every few minutes so they don’t burn. Bake until skins are golden brown, then transfer to the paper towel lined plate with the bacon.

After cooking the potato skins, drain the excess fat. Add the onions and cook for 6 minutes over medium heat until golden brown and soft.

Add minced garlic and flour and cook for another minute.

Add chicken stock, potatoes, bay leaf, thyme, salt and pepper. I usually also add half the bacon then reserve the rest for garnish later but you can reserve the bacon entirely for garnish later.

Bring to a boil, cover and reduce the heat to a gentle boil. Cook for about 7 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Then add milk, bring to a bare simmer, and remove from heat.

Remove the bay leaf and puree about half the soup. You can blend in a batches with a blender, or use an immersion blender (I usually just use a whisk and mash the potatoes by hand. )This will give the soup a smoother consistency and also make it thicker. If you prefer a smoother consistency just puree the entire thing but I like my soup a bit chunky.

Serve the soup with crispy potato skins, bacon, and whatever toppings you desire.

INTRODUCTION

             ‘HOLES` is a fictional story written by Louis Sachar who is the popular author of There is a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom, Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes, and the Marvin Redpost series, among many others. The author is a winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. for this book. This book was awarded much more awards;1998 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, A Christopher Award for Juvenile Fiction, An ALA Notable Book, An ALA Best Book for Young Adults, An ALA Quick Pick for Young Adults, A New York Times Book Review Notable Children’s Book of the Year, A Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Book of the Year, A Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books Blue Ribbon Book, A School library Journal best Book of the Year, A publishers Weekly Notable Children’s Book of Distinction, A New York Public Library Children’s Book of 1998-100 titles for Reading and Sharing, A Taxas Lone Star Award Nominee and A NECBA Fall list title. He was born in1954, in NewYork and now lives in Austin, texas. This story takes place in a imaginary place, a desert called Camp Green Lake which was once the largest lake in Taxas.  It sets in the present day, an earlier time period and the future. In the paragraphs that follow, I will give a summary of the story, including plot, climax, and conflict. Then, I will analyze the story more, talking about character details, point of view, theme, symbolism, metaphors, and irony.

SUMMARY

        First I will outline this story by explaining the plot, which is fairly lengthy as there are so many details. Camp Green Lake is a camp for bad boys. Some people generally believe that digging a holoe every day in the hot sun will turn bad boys into good boys. Stanley Yelnats was arrested one day and given a choice, go to jail, or go to Camp Green Lake. He had never been to camp before, so he decided to go camp. In Camp Green Lake,the boys build character by spending all day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. Stanly began to realize that there is more than character improvement at Camp Green Lake and the warden is looking for something. At the end of the book, he finds out all of the truth; the family curse,the mystery of the holes, the drought that destroyed Green Lake, the legend of Kising Kate Barlow who is an infamous outlaw of the Wild West. Stanly’s family is poor and believes themselves to be under the curse of Stanly’s no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-grandfather. The curse has been extended through multiple generations and began because the grate grandfather, Elya Yealnats did not keep his promise to Madame Zeroni who helped him. Stanly comes to America, where he marries Sarah Miller, and though they work hard, they are always at the wrong place at the wrong time. The one Yealnats who was successful, Stanley Yealnats the I was robbed of his fortune by Kissing Kate Barlow, an outlaw who stole everything he had.

    Next, I will explain the features of characters because in this book there are a variety of characters. Stanly Yealnats is a main role. He is under a curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yealnatses.One day, he was accused of stealing a pair of shoes donated by basketball shoes and happened to send to camps which is a little bit strange. He met many boys who have funny nicknames at Camp Green Lake; Squid, white boy, X-Ray, black boy, Barf Bag, Margnet, Armpit, Zigzag and Zero. Mr. Pendanski is a counselor and his name can be divided by three parts; pen, dance, key. Mr Sir has a tatoo of a rattlesneake and has just been in a bad mood ever since he quit smoking.

ANALYSIS

   I will analyze the book by piciking up some techniques of writing; turning point, symbol,themes and point of view. The fact that a pair of shoes donated by basketball great Clyde “Sweetfeet” Livingston to a celebrity auction fell from the sky onto his head is turning point. It made him go to camp and happened to reveal some curses. His father used to sing a song to him that passesd from generation to generation; “If only, if only,” the woodpecker sighs, “The bark on the tree was just a little bit softer.” While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely, He cries to the moo–oo–oon,. This is not just a song but symbol of some curse.This noveal deals with the issue of justice. This theme is present on seveal levels. First, there is the idea that in order for justice to happen, people must be punished for their crimes. That is why all the boys are sent to Camp Green Lake.It is possible that what happens at Camp Green Lake is a comment on the justice system in America. People who make mistakes have the chance to make amends, but doing so is hard and is not done under pleasant circumstances. Rehabilitation is part of the overall picture, and that is the intent of the Camp. Bad boys are rehabilitated into good ones by hard work which builds strong characters and strong body. This story is told by the third point of view. That means that the voice telling the story sees everything and knows all the action. It is as if they are watching and narrating everything from above.This viewpoint is helpful we can see all the action of the boys, the Wooden and the camp counselors. Neither Stanly nor Hector is telling the story through their own viewpoint.

CONCLUTION and OPINION

     I suppose Stanly learned a whole bunch of things such as the friendliship with the other kids. I was really moved by the story about Zero and Stanly. At first, Zero tended to be introverted and nobody seemed to care about him at all. However, as Zero became interested in Stanly, both of them gradually became friendly with each other. Stanly helped Zero get over his illiteracy, while Zero helped Stanly dig holes. They could not have been through such a precious time if they had been in jail. Eventually, Stanly was found innocent and he could be released from Camp Green Lake and so was Zero.Though the kids had experienced a lot of hardships in Camp Green Lake, I guess their friendship in there must have been unforgettable. Although this book is mystery story, there are no charm or devils or adventurous things like Hurry Potter. I think this makes Holes better book. In adition,this book teaches us the importance of friendliship and humanity through suprising, interesting story.

INTRODUCTION

   Oliver Twist is written by Charles Dickens 1838. This describes the way Oliver, an orphan is growing up ,going through the difficulties. This book points out the problem of a child protagonist that was revised at that time. The book has been adapted as a film and a long-running Broadway musical and has been considered a classic ever since it was first publiushed. Charles Dickens uses the characters and situations in the book to make a pointed social commentary, attacking the hypocrisy and flowse of institutions, including his society’ government,its law and criminal system and its method of dealing with poor people. Interestingly, he dose not suggest any solutions; he marely points out the suffering inflicted by these systems and their deep injustice. Dickens basically believed that most people were good at heart but their good impulses could be destroyed by social ills.

SUMMARY 

   Oliver who lives in a home for orphans was being abused by the parish who controls this home named Mr Bumble. One day, Oliver picked up the worst luck of the draw and went to Mr Bumble to give them more food. He ended up going out from this orphan and went to the mortician for a worker. In spite of this situation, he run away from this mortician and went to London. He got into the gang of the theft followed by Fagin. Fagin tried to tutored him to steal something. Oliver withstand the need of the gang and Mrs Brownlow protected him. Oliver lived there satisfactory for a minute. However, Fagin found out him and made him to steal something with Bill Sikes.When Oliver tried to go into the house that they were trying to do stealing, he was hurted. Rose Maylie took care of him and she treated him very kindly. Monks tried to get a contact with Fagin with the bad information. Nancy who is kind to Oliver did an action to help Oliver out and told him about secrets. As a result, Sikes killed her for her betrayal action. On the other hand, the police found out the evidence of the gang and took Fagin and Sikes. Oliver suceeded to live a happy life with Mr Brownlow.

ANALYSIS

  Charles Dickens makes considerable use of symbolism. The many Oliver faces are primarily good versus evil which continually trying to corrupt and exploit the good, but the good won out in the end. For instance, Fagin is a symbolism of merry old gentlemen. Not only people but also things or description symbols something. The London slums is a symbol of terror and brutal mood of England at that time while the countryside becomes the symbol of heaven and safer , happier place to Oliver. Food plays an important role in this book as well.  The part that Oliver’s request for more food and the shocked exclamation of Mr.Bumble’s is one of the most famouse scenes.Toward the end of the novel,the desicion of Nancy to meet Brownlow and rose on London Bridge reveals the symbolic aspect in Oliver Twist. Bridges exist to link two places . The meeting on London Bridge represents the collision of two worlds unlikely ever to come into contact-the idyllic world of  Brownlow and Rose, and the atmosphere of degradation in which Nancy lives. Throughout the novel, Dickens employs a shifting narrative voice. In this book , there are hisory context. In the mid-nineteen century, England was suffering from economic instability and widespread unemployment as I researched on the internet. The economic instability was a legathy of the Napolenic era, which lasted until 1815. During this time,England was at war with France. The English government had imposed heavy taxes to pay for the war, and althogh there didnot really affect the wealthy classes,they were a crushing burden on the poor; the rising of prices, the scarce of the food, the rise of the inflation. In addition, because of the war, French and European markets for English goods were closed, leading umployment among workers. Workers are also umemployment because the increasing use of machinary in manufacturing had made many of their jobs obsolete.

OPINION and CONCLUSION

  I think Oliver Twist describes not only a sad story in London but also a variety of problems from history terms to mental ones through using some techniques such as irony, symbol, satire and so on. That is why Oliver twist became a famous novel worldwide and was awarded . The book itself is now translated into more than 25languages. I recommend this book to all of you whoever have interests in a history In London or not because this book is made well to understand the situation in London at that time.This book must give you some thoughts and anger for the devastated experiments in London at that time.

I often listened to the song by Ketty Perry. Her newest album called One Of The Boys,is brilliant and I like the song named Thinking of You. This is a lyrics of it. Her high, pretty voice is so nice. Please check it out on You Tube or CD shops!!!

           I saw a movie called “Tokyo Gomi Onna( Trash Woman in Tokyo)’ made by my favorite directer. It is a love but strange story. A woman called Kyoko always picked up the trash box put by a neighboor she likes. At the end of the story, she found out that the neighboorhood that she liked knew everything she did, although Kyoko got along with the neighboorhood. Kyoko cried heavily with the saddness and shame. She went to the trashbox to trash what she stolen.

        This movie moved me a lot because I could understand her pure feeling from bottom of my heart. There are something similar between the character of her and that of mine. When I have someone I really love, I could not do anything in front of him although I could not help thinking about him all the time.  Tokyo Gomi Onnna describes one form of the love, especially strange form of love. I recommend this movie to not boys but girls because I think it is hard for men to understand the pure feeling of woman.

      Today, I would like to introduce a movie called “Erin Brockovich’ played by Julia Roberts. I saw this movie because I am of Julia Roberts. It is based on a real story which is about a woman who succeed to get the most expensive reconciled cash ,3 hundred billion 3 thouthand 3 million dollars in the U.S. .She divorced twice, has three children, doesnnot have any money, didnnot take an education properly. In spite of such a devastated fact, she has full of passion and indomitable mentality. She happened to discover the concealment of evidence about water pollution on working in the law office. She helped 6 hundred people and as a result, helped herself.

       Seeing this movie made me feel refereshed and gave me power to try to do something hard. It moved me a lot because it is not a fiction but a real story.  Julia Roberts played lots of roles in a variety of movies and I think this movie exaggerated her good characters.

       This time, I would like to introduce the movie called ” The Devil Wears Prada.”.  It is a success story of one fashionable girl. Andy played by Anne Hathaway graduated from the top level university and went to NY to become a journalist. Althogh she had no sense of fashion, she happened to become an editor of fashion magazine named RUNWAY. However, this post is terror controlled by Miranda ,the chief editor. Miranda say something unbelievable and unreal to Andy ,but Andy managed to do with her needs. Miranda admitted Andy for her great work, but Andy became to have questions to continue this busy work and in the end quit this job and choose her private life.

        I read this movie on a theater and later bought a DVD ,and then read the book both in English and Japanese. I become to want to see this movie when I happent to give up something. I think most of you know or see this movie and if you donnot stil see it, I really recommend to see it. It will surely give you some courage to keep on trying.
